Everton are reportedly keen on Jean-Phillipe Gbamin.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin of 1. FSV Mainz 05 looks on during the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and 1. FSV Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park on April 13, 2019 in Dortmund, Germany.

According to Foot Mercato, Everton have identified Mainz star Jean-Philippe Gbamin as their preferred replacement for Idrissa Gueye.

Gueye is set for a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with the report claiming that the Senegal international will be heading to the French capital for around €31million (£28million).

Gueye leaves a huge hole in the Everton midfield, and they need to find a replacement quickly. Fortunately, Marcel Brands appears to have his signing in mind.

It’s claimed that Brands wants to sign Mainz star Gbamin, and a deal worth around €35million (£31million) could be done quickly as the Toffees look to get Gueye’s replacement on board rapidly.

The report even claims that Brands wanted Gbamin at PSV Eindhoven when he was coming through at Lens, and his progress in Germany with Mainz has only reinforced his admiration.

Gbamin, 23, is a big, strong holding midfielder, but also has great mobility and quality on the ball, whilst he’s able to play that defensive role like Gueye, racking up tackles and interceptions.

The Ivorian international has a huge future ahead of him, and could become the ideal all-action midfielder to step into Gueye’s role.

Brands will see that potential in Gbamin, and investing in a young player to replace a key star at Goodison Park is the type of move the Dutchman will love to make.
