According to Sky Sports, Everton are interested in signing Conor Coady from Premier League rivals Wolves, with Newcastle also keen.

What’s the story?

Well, Frank Lampard still isn’t satisfied with his backline despite the signing of James Tarkowski.

Sky Sports believe the Toffees are keen to bring the £62,000-a-week man back to Merseyside, where he rose through the youth ranks at Liverpool.

It comes after Newcastle made contact with Wolves over the signing of Coady.

Sky Sports add that Wolves are reluctant to sell their captain, but are sympathetic about his desire to play for England at the World Cup in November.

Interest in Coady comes after he made 42 appearances in all competitions for Wolves last season, scoring four goals.

The Liverpool-born defender has a contract running until June 2025 at Molineux, so we presume he won’t come cheap if Wolves do decide to entertain offers.

Conor Coady should choose Newcastle over Everton

In our view, the 29-year-old’s chances of impressing Gareth Southgate would remain the same regardless of whether he stayed at Wolves or not, so that was an odd detail for Sky Sports to mention.

Coady has already won ten caps for England while playing for Wolves, and Southgate has even given him the captain’s armband on a few occasions.

In fact, Everton nearly suffered relegation last season, whereas Wolves enjoyed a comfortable campaign, so we believe his chances of making the England squad would actually be dented by a move to Goodison Park.

If Coady is to leave Wolves, Newcastle would be a much better choice.

On Tyneside, the Scouser would play alongside quality defenders such as Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier at the back, and Newcastle would surely give him a better foundation to impress Southgate.

Keep an eye on this situation, as only time will tell where Coady ends up this summer.
