According to TVI24, Everton are now very close to signing Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon, with the deal said to be practically guaranteed.

What’s the story?

Well, the Portuguese news outlet seem to believe that Everton are very close to wrapping up a deal for the 22-year-old.

TVI24 claim that one thing holding up a final agreement is the fact that Everton have been trying to lower the fee until the very last minute.

Sporting Lisbon want €20 million (£17 million) for their No.8, which the Toffees could presumably afford with relative ease.

It was recently claimed that Everton could take the South American on loan, but it now seems that a permanent deal is in the offing.

Marcel Brands is clearly trying to complete business for Everton as cheaply as possible this summer.

It’s understandable that Brands wants to save Everton money, especially amid a global pandemic.

However, dithering over Sporting Lisbon’s asking price could come back to bite Everton on the backside, in our view.

An exciting, 22-year-old, Brazilian midfield maestro is bound to have many more suitors beyond Everton, so Brands is playing a dangerous game.

You would presume Nunes is a primary target for the Toffees, seeing as he appears to be among the first players they’ve moved for this summer.

In that respect, it would be heartbreaking to lose out on him, all for the sake of a few million pounds.
