According to Calciomercato, Everton are now in pole position to sign Matias Vecino in 2022, with Rafa Benitez keen on the 30-year-old.
What’s the story?
Well, it seems as if Everton could finally sign Vecino in January.
The 56-cap Uruguay international has long been on Everton’s radar, with Gianluca Di Marzio claiming that Carlo Ancelotti wanted him at Goodison Park in 2020.
Now, Benitez could land the Inter Milan No.8, who has struggled to make the starting XI at the San Siro this season.
Vecino has only made one start in Serie A this term, and looks set to swap Milan for Merseyside in January.
The South American would add plenty of steel to Everton’s midfield, an area in which Benitez could certainly do with a bit more depth.
As things stand, Abdoulaye Doucoure is effectively holding down the midfield department, with all due respect to Everton’s other midfield options.
Everton shouldn’t give Matias Vecino a lengthy contract
As aforesaid, the signing of Vecino is a necessary one given Benitez’s lack of quality midfield options.
However, the Toffees should not give him a contract lasting longer than one year.
Vecino is 30 years of age, and has never set foot in the Premier League before.
If Everton sign him on a three-year deal – for example – and he struggles, then they’ll be lumbered with the Uruguayan on the wage bill.
Benitez already has plenty of deadwood he needs to shift, such as Cenk Tosun, so it would be brainless to add more to the Everton squad.
If Vecino wants a longer deal, he’ll have to earn it.
