Everton are leading Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Sami Khedira as Juventus look to cancel his £100,000-a-week contract in January, as reported by Football Italia.

With Andrea Pirlo embarking on a substantial rebuilding project at the Serie A champions, it seems only a matter of time before a German World Cup winner is following fellow veterans Miralem Pjanic, Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi out the door.

Khedira has not kicked a ball in 2020/21, falling behind newcomers Arthur and Weston McKennie in Pirlo’s pecking order, with his £100,000-a-week contract proving to be a serious drain on Juve’s already dwindling resources.

A man who lifted La Liga and Bundesliga titles with Real Madrid and Stuttgart admitted to Sky last week that he dreams of sampling life in the Premier League before he hangs up his boots, adding that he would jump at the chance to reunite with one of his former Los Blancos bosses in England.

Jose Mourinho has been silent so far but Carlo Ancelotti, who tasted Champions League glory alongside Khedira in 2014, admitted that he has great memories of a ‘fantastic professional’ who he would ‘love’ to work with again.

That opportunity might just arise in January.

Football Italia reports that Juventus plan to let Khedira leave on a free transfer, with Everton currently the most likely destination for his signature.

The 33-year-old would become the third player to reunite with Ancelotti on Merseyside this year, joining Allan and James Rodriguez in Everton blue.

“Why did I decide to leave Khedira on the pitch?” ex-Juventus boss Max Allegri told Mediaset last year, describing the midfielder as ‘world-class’ .

“Because he is an international player, intelligent, who knows when to raise and lower the rhythm. He knows how to recognize the moments of the game.

“(He) must be applauded, he has been doing extraordinary things for seven years.”
