Everton are one of the clubs monitoring Freddie Woodman’s future at Newcastle as the goalkeeper edges closer to the final year of his contract at St James’ Park, according to a report from the Chronicle.
Woodman is arguably one of the brightest talents that Rafa Benitez has on his books on Tyneside. However, the 22-year-old has been unable to force his way into the Magpies’ plans with Martin Dubravka playing every Premier League game this season.
The Chronicle reports that a ‘contract wrangle’ prevented the stopper from heading out on loan, and it appears that a queue of clubs is now forming in case he soon becomes available.
The report suggests that Everton and Arsenal are currently keeping tabs on Woodman, while Fulham and Celtic are amongst those to have scouted the youngster at some stage this season.
With his contract expiring at the end of next season, it would appear that the situation surrounding his future could come to a head this summer if Newcastle decide that they have no choice but to let him go.
It would be a blow for the Magpies to lose one of their biggest talents. But while they have Dubravka as number one and options such as Karl Darlow also available, Woodman’s clearest path towards first-team football does perhaps take him away from St James’ Park.
But with the likes of Everton and Arsenal also boasting established number one options, it may not be easy for either of Newcastle’s Premier League rivals to convince the player to join them at this stage in his career.
