The Blues were reportedly keen on the AC Milan midfielder.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Everton have missed out on signing highly-rated AC Milan youngster Niccolo Zanellato.

The Blues were relatively busy in the summer transfer window, adding five new players to their squad.

While they were focused on improving the first-team squad, they also showed their desire to keep building for the future with captures such as young forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

And it appears that the English striker was not the only youth signing they were targeting.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, they were keen on a move for AC Milan youngster Zanellato.

Indeed, the Italian website reports that the Blues had scouted him live on more than one occasion and were ready to make an approach.

They did not though and now look unlikely with the Italian giants having secured their talented midfielder to a new deal until 2019.

TuttoMercatoWeb reports that they handed him that new contract as a means to not only reward their young starlet but also to ward off the interest from the Toffees.

With Everton now having the financial clout to pluck young players from other teams, though, perhaps this could be one player they return to in future.
