McCarthy has struggled for opportunities for Everton this season.

A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that James McCarthy could be about to put the likes of West Brom and Aston Villa on alert by potentially telling Everton that he would like to leave the club during the January transfer window.

McCarthy has previously been a first-team regular for the Toffees, but has found opportunities much more difficult to come by this season under Ronald Koeman.

And after making just eight appearances this term, McCarthy is keen to weigh up his options, and the Mail reports that he may now ask to leave Goodison Park.

The news is likely to be well received by the Baggies, the Villans and Newcastle, who the Mail add have all registered an interest in the former Wigan Athletic man in recent times.

Though McCarthy has struggled for game-time at Everton, there is no question that he could be an extremely useful addition to all three squads, especially to the sides currently fighting for promotion in the Championship.

The 26-year-old has demonstrated that he has the quality to thrive at the highest level, and should arguably be reaching an age where he should be about to enjoy the best years of his career.
