According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton have made a first move for Roma defender Chris Smalling by ‘requesting information’ about him.

It’s stated that Roma are willing to let Smalling leave because Jose Mourinho wants to sign a central defender with ‘different characteristics’.

Everton have asked about a possible move, with Smalling potentially being ‘sacrificed’ to help Mourinho bring in other signings.

Do Everton need Smalling?

Everton do already have a number of centre backs; Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey are all battling for first-team action.

Adding Smalling into the mix seems like a strange move, but La Roma 24 back up Di Marzio’s claims that Everton are indeed keen.

Smalling turns 32 in November, and that’s the kind of profile Everton need to stay away from, with younger, hungry players needed rather than players with no resale value.

How has Smalling fared in Italy?

Smalling joined Roma in 2019, initially arriving on loan before the move was turned permanent.

The former England ace did impress at first, and was hailed as ‘fast’ and ‘extraordinary’ by Paulo Fonseca in 2020.

Smalling has rebuilt his reputation, but managed just 16 league appearances last season as injuries were a problem – something Everton need to consider.
