Everton and Leeds United have reportedly backed away from their interest in Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks, a player Antonio Conte is eager to sell this summer among many others in the Spurs squad.

According to the Athletic, the Toffees have walked away from their interest in Winks due to a lack of progression in a deal to sign the England international, whilst Leeds have made a similar decision following a tentative interest in the 26-year-old midfielder, who Tottenham have been looking to sell for some time.

Winks hardly featured for Spurs last season and under Antonio Conte, it appears that the academy graduate is all but surplus to requirements, with reports suggesting that Tottenham will be open to selling the midfielder this summer for around £20m.

One of many senior players Tottenham are trying and failing to sell this summer, Winks was once viewed by many as the next great Spurs playmaker following his incredible breakthrough under Mauricio Pochettino and in standout performances against the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

However, these early signs proved to be misleading as injuries and inconsistent form coupled together with managers coming in and out of Tottenham have left Winks on the sidelines just waiting to be sold, with Everton and Leeds seemingly two sides who were interested in signing the north London misfit.

Indeed, with these two Premier League clubs now out of the picture, Tottenham could really struggle to sell Winks for good this summer, with other suitors unlikely to make themselves known until the latter stages of the transfer window, where even then Spurs might have to only settle for a loan exit for the England midfielder.

Selling Winks was always going to be a struggle for Tottenham given their more than generous price tag and the player’s reported £91,000-a-week wages, and given this update on Everton and Leeds’ interest in the midfielder, the challenge of selling the midfielder has just grown even harder.

Whilst a club could come along to save the day late on in the window, as mentioned, there is a strong chance that this will only be a loan deal given that the finances Tottenham want for a player of Winks’ quality is simply too unreasonable, even though there could be a chance that the midfielder returns to his best the second he is out of north London.
