Everton could consider moving for Paulo Fonseca at the end of the season, according to reports.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Everton have decided to keep Paulo Fonseca on their radar ahead of the summer as Sam Allardyce continues to come under pressure.

It has been an underwhelming season for the Toffees. While they find themselves just two points back of seventh place in ninth, many expected that they would have no problem proving to be the top six’s biggest rivals once again, and some would have envisaged the Merseyside outfit perhaps contending to break into that top six.

Much of that blame has to fall on former manager Ronald Koeman’s shoulders, but current boss Sam Allardyce has never quite convinced the fans that he is the right man to lead the club forward. And now a report from the Mail has suggested that he could come under pressure if results do not improve.

The Mail suggests that Fonseca is still an Everton target. The Shakhtar Donetsk boss is out of contract in the summer, and Farhad Moshiri is now monitoring Allardyce’s performance over the coming months.

The Mail adds that Moshiri is particularly disappointed with the club’s £27 million acquisition of Cenk Tosun during last month’s window, and that is tempting the majority shareholder to consider wholesale changes amongst the management structure, with Marcel Brands also on the club’s radar for a behind the scenes role.

Does Big Sam deserve the chop?

Everton were in a bit of a mess by the time that Allardyce’s appointment was all but confirmed. Big Sam has gradually put more daylight between themselves and the bottom three and they will now be disappointed if they do not go on and secure seventh.

Nevertheless, he has never managed to win the entirety of the support over, and their recent run of two wins in 10 – which has included heavy defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal – will not have helped his cause at all.

Many Everton fans appear to believe that Allardyce being in charge for a long tenure will not be a positive move from the club. But it will certainly be difficult to argue that he has not done enough to earn more time if he does secure seventh with a squad that looked bereft of confidence when Koeman’s tenure came to an end earlier in the campaign.
