According to Stop & Goal, Everton are interested in Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who Newcastle have previously been linked with.
It was the Chronicle who revealed back in October that the Magpies had scouted the 22-year-old.
Now, it seems like Steve Bruce’s side will face competition from Everton for the 23-cap Japan international’s services.
Tomiyasu – who Bologna paid €7 million (£6 million) for – has impressed this season across 26 Serie A appearances, in which he’s scored two goals.
Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in the versatile defender, who Transfermarkt shows has played at right-back, left-back and centre-back this term.
So, what type of player is Tomiyasu?

Well, when revealing that Newcastle had scouted Bologna’s No.14, the Chronicle included some quotes from Manuel Minguzzi, a reporter for Tutto Bologna.
Interestingly, Minguzzi claimed that Tomiyasu was ‘perfect for the Premier League’ – he also described him as ‘applied and focused’ in his work.
The reporter said: “Tomiyasu is a very versatile defender. He can be both a full-back and a central player, he is very applied and focused.
“I hope Tomiyasu stays here but I think Tomi is perfect for the Premier League and I believe that one day he will play in a top club.”

By the sounds of it, he would be a great signing for either Everton or Newcastle.
Even if the Japanese defender doesn’t immediately hit the ground running, his age offers encouragement.
At just 22, Tomiyasu has plenty of room for improvement, which would make him a decent long-term investment for whoever wins the race for his signature.
