Report: Everton join Liverpool in race to sign Koeman’s former player from PL rivals

Everton have joined bitter rivals Liverpool in the race to sign Premier League goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from Tottenham Hotspur, according to talkSPORT (live blog, 12.10pm).

Adrian might have tainted his reputation at Anfield during the staggering 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa – although he isn’t the only Merseyside-based shot-stopper who had a weekend to forget.

Jordan Pickford at least had three more points to console himself with but the Everton number one was left beating the turf in frustration after the latest in a long line of blunders gifted Brighton their opening goal during Saturday’s 4-2 thriller at Goodison Park.

And while Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said little more than a week ago he wasn’t looking to sign a new goalkeeper, it seems another Pickford howler might have changed his mind.

Because the early Premier League pacesetters are negotiating a deal with Roma for Spain international Pau Lopez, while also looking to bring in Gazzaniga from north London.

Forever the bridesmaid, rarely the bride, Tottenham’s Argentine benchwarmer has emerged as a target for Everton and Liverpool – although it seems unlikely Jose Mourinho would be happy to part with a man he described as “magic” during Hugo Lloris’s spell on the sidelines last year.

“He did very well, very good,” former Everton boss Ronald Koeman told Southampton’s website during their time together at St Mary’s.

“He’s developing. He’s still young and we are happy we have Paulo.”
