Everton need a goalscorer – who better than a player who has 31 goals in 2017 alone?
The Serbian Super Liga is hardly one of the most illustrious competitions in European football. The league’s viewing figures will have skyrocketed this season, however, with a number of British clubs tracking the progress of Red Star Belgrade’s prolific centre-forward Richmond Boakye.
The Ghanaian international has 31 goals for club and country in 2017 alone – enough to convince Antonio Conte to plot a reunion with the former Juventus youngster at Chelsea.
Celtic have made habit of bringing in inspired signings from under-the-radar European leagues. With the long-term future of Moussa Dembele still uncertain, Boakye could be a fine replacement for The Frenchman.
And there is now a new, if not surprising, name in the frame for a striker who has as many goals this calendar year as Cristiano Ronaldo.
According to Hot Sport, Everton sent scouts to watch Boakye in action against Bundesliga side Cologne in the Europa League last month – and will have been sufficiently impressed as the 24-year-old rifled home a stunning winner from long-range.
Solving Everton’s goalscoring woes
“There’s already (interest) announced from Everton and Monchengladbach, who after his match in Cologne began the mission with the goal of buying a player,” the player’s agent is quoted as saying.
The report adds that Borussia Monchengladbach, Anderlecht, CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce have also watched a striker valued at around £10 million.
This, therefore, has shades of Everton’s summer pursuit of Henry Onyekuru – a previously unknown striker who became one of the most in-demand players in Europe thanks to a prolific season for KAS Eupen.
And The Toffees will hope that Boakye is the man who can solve their goalscoring woes, Everton scoring just five times in eight Premier League games since selling Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United.
