Everton are reportedly determined to land Olivier Giroud in January.
According to The Mirror, Everton will make a new bid for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in January – and appear confident of landing their man.
The Toffees may have splashed the cash on the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Nikola Vlasic, Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney over the summer, but one position certainly still needs strengthening.
Romelu Lukaku’s move to Manchester United has left Everton with a huge hole to fill in attack, and whilst Oumar Niasse scored twice against Bournemouth on Saturday, manager Ronald Koeman needs another centre forward in January.
One of Everton’s summer targets was Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, and The Mirror now report that the Toffees hope to finally push through a £40million deal during the January transfer window.
It’s claimed that Everton had hoped to sign Giroud before last month’s transfer deadline, but confusion over Alexis Sanchez’s future with the club meant that no deal was struck between the two clubs.
Now, with Giroud still struggling for first-team football at the Emirates Stadium having failed to make any league starts this season, the report states that Giroud is keen on a move to Goodison Park, where he would be Everton’s leading striker.
The Frenchman, 30, joined Arsenal from Montpellier back in 2012, has hit double figures in goals in each of his Premier League campaigns with the Gunners, and provides the target man figure that Koeman is looking for.
£40million seems a huge price to pay for an experienced striker though, and whilst he could score the goals that Everton need, fans may not be too keen on the idea of splashing so much money on a player who will be 31 in January.
