According to The Guardian, Everton have made progress in their attempts to bring Lille defender Gabriel to Goodison Park this summer.

It’s claimed that Everton are moving along with their bid for Gabriel, following months of speculation about the Brazilian joining the Toffees.

Gianluca Di Marzio even reported recently that Gabriel actually underwent a medical with Everton before the global pandemic, but the Toffees then began to back away.

It’s now believed that Everton are moving the deal forward again, in the hope of beating a Premier League rival to his signature.

Foot Mercato reported last month that Tottenham had launched a late move for Gabriel, in the hope of ‘interfering’ with Everton’s bid.

Spurs do need a new left-footed centre back with Jan Vertonghen set to leave for nothing this summer, and Gabriel would fit the bill.

However, Everton are looking for a left-footed centre back too, and having seemingly laid the groundwork with Gabriel, they’re accelerating again.

The 22-year-old has starred for Lille this season, showing the ability to play out from the back as well as being dominant in the air and having a fine reading of the game – and as things stand, Everton may think they can pip Tottenham.
