According to the Daily Mail, Everton are hoping to meet with the Premier League as they fear breaking Profit and Sustainability rules.

The Toffees, like many football clubs, have suffered financially through the pandemic, but for a number of reasons, the Merseyside club have had it tougher than most.

Indeed, Everton’s high wage bill, frivolous spending and new stadium have led to Everton posting massive losses between 2017 and 2020, while, according to the Mail, another loss in excess of £100m could be reported this time around.

The Premier League rules state that a club is only allowed to lose £105m in a three-year period, and Everton will be way beyond that point if this report is accurate.

The Toffees will be forced to submit their latest accounts and projections later this month, and if they don’t fall in line with the Premier League’s rules, they could be sanctioned.

What sanctions could they face? Well, anything from a fine to a points deduction, but it has to be said that a points deduction is unlikely at this point.

Indeed, only one Premier League team in history has been docked points for financial mismanagement – Portsmouth back in 2009/10, and we’ve seen on numerous occasions that the Premier League can be rather toothless on these matters.

In fact, since their inception, no club has been found to be in breach of these profit and sustainability rules, and with covid forcing an alteration of the rules, it’s hard to imagine the governing body coming down hard on Everton.

Is a points deduction a possibility? Yes, is it likely? No.

Either way, Everton are in a precarious position financially, and we hate to imagine what effect relegation could have on the club.
