Everton striker Bassala Sambou is weeks away from being a free agent.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are keen to get striker Bassala Sambou tied down to a new contract – but he’s admitted his desire to play first-team football.
Everton are likely to pursue at least one new striker this summer, but risk seeing Sambou leave the club at the end of his contract in a matter of weeks.
German-born Sambou, 21, joined Everton from Coventry City in 2016, having emerged as one of the top young talents with the Sky Blues.
Sambou was tipped for a bright future, but has so far been unable to break into the Everton first team, with no senior appearances to his name with the Toffees.
Sambou has been a regular for David Unsworth’s Under-23 side, scoring 11 goals in 24 games in total this season, whilst also picking up a couple of assists.
At his age, Sambou should be really pushing for first-team football now, and the Liverpool Echo report that Everton want to hand Sambou a new deal given that his current contract ends in a matter of weeks.
That’s all well and good, but Sambou clearly has aspirations of playing regularly. He’s been sat in the shadows at Everton for almost three years, and that’s not enough now.
“First-team is where I want to be,” said Sambou. “Somewhere playing first-team next season,” he added, meaning he either needs playing time at Everton, a loan move away or possibly walking away from Goodison Park to pursue football as a free agent this summer.
