Everton are reportedly hoping to win the race to sign Matthijs de Ligt in one of the most exciting signings of the summer.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Everton have joined the race to sign Matthijs de Ligt, but the Toffees could have to see off competition from Manchester City and pay £50 million to get the 18-year-old through the Goodison Park door.

Marcel Brands and Marco Silva are continuing to settle into their new surroundings on Merseyside, and despite taking over a side that finished eighth in the Premier League last season, they will know that they will have a lot of work to do over the coming months.

And it appears that Everton have set their sights extremely high in the transfer market, with The Telegraph reporting that a move for de Ligt is on their radar as they look to improve the Toffees’ defence.

De Ligt is undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects anywhere in Europe right now. The 18-year-old is playing regularly for Ajax and has a handful of caps for The Netherlands national side. Unsurprisingly, the Eredivisie side are not ready to let the teenager leave on the cheap.

The Telegraph reports that Everton could have to pay £50 million if they hope to sign the defender, while Pep Guardiola also has his eye on bringing the centre-back to Manchester City.

If Silva could land de Ligt, it would arguably be one of the most exciting deals from any club in the transfer window. It would not be a surprise if he had interest from every single one of Europe’s heavyweights this summer, so Everton would undoubtedly be pulling off one of the biggest coups possible by making a move happen.

And if they managed to land de Ligt this summer – The Telegraph describes the Toffees’ interest as ambitious – it would not only be a sensational statement from Silva and Brands, but it would also make a huge difference to a defence that conceded 58 goals last season and clearly needs refreshing during the coming years.
