According to a report in The Sun (live blog 14:00, 8th August), Everton defender Callum Connolly is set to leave Goodison Park in the near future.

Connolly will join Wigan on a season long-loan, with Everton letting the youngster leave.

Connolly is regarded as one of Everton’s top prospects, but it is questionable how much first-team football he would receive if he stayed with Marco Silva’s side this season.

The youngster, who plays in defensive midfield or at full-back, has plenty of competition from more senior players at Everton and a loan move was considered best for his development.

The 20-year-old will now head to newly promoted Championship side Wigan, where he should see plenty of action.

Connolly has spent the past two seasons out on loan from Everton, and this will be his second temporary spell with Wigan.
