Despite links to Rafael Benitez, Roberto Martinez is still in the running to become Everton’s next manager according to a new report from ESPN.
Benitez has been the hot candidate in recent days, and many expect him to land the job following Carlo Ancelotti’s exit.
The Mirror claim that Benitez has now held three rounds of talks with Everton and is close to being appointed as Toffees manager.
Martinez back to Everton instead of Benitez?
However, ESPN state that Everton are down to two choices in the race for the job, and it will be Benitez or Roberto Martinez.
Martinez is believed to be open to coming back to Everton having been sacked by the Toffees in 2016 following just three years in the job.
Marcel Brands and Bill Kenwright allegedly want Martinez, with Moshiri seemingly preferring to go for Benitez.
There seems to be an internal struggle over Everton’s next boss, but there is allegedly a very real chance that the Toffees still go for Martinez over Benitez.

Neither Benitez nor Martinez likely to be popular
Everton fans have been raging on Twitter at the mere idea of Benitez becoming their new manager, having managed bitter rivals Liverpool and called the Toffees a ‘small club’ in the past.
His football isn’t exactly entertaining either, leaving Everton feeling very underwhelmed.
Is Martinez any better? The 47-year-old had three years in charge of Everton and couldn’t build a solid back four, ultimately leading to his exit.
Coming back five years later is unlikely to be a popular choice, though he could do wonders for his profile by winning Euro 2020 in charge of Belgium this summer.
