According to The Mirror, Everton are pursuing a move for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli in what could be a blockbuster swoop.

The Toffees did land a centre back last summer as Ashley Williams arrived from Swansea City, but both he and Phil Jagielka are now over 30 years of age, whilst Ramiro Funes Mori has yet to prove himself as a top Premier League defender.

Another centre back should be on Ronald Koeman’s radar for the summer transfer window, and reports suggest that Everton are lining up a big-money move for a Serie A central defender.

The Mirror report that Everton are keen on AC Milan star Alessio Romagnoli, with the Italian international believed to feature prominently on Koeman’s summer transfer wish list.

Romagnoli, 22, joined Milan from Roma in 2015, and has made over 60 appearances in almost two seasons for the club, serving as one of their most important defenders.

Touted for a huge future, the left-footed centre back already has five Italy caps to his name, and Everton are now claimed to be plotting a huge swoop for the defender in a move that would be a real signal of intent from the Toffees.

As reported by BBC Sport, Chelsea failed with a £35million move for Romagnoli just nine months ago, meaning Everton may need to spend even more than the offer put on the table by Antonio Conte’s men.

Splashing huge money on a centre back, potentially close to the near-£50million Everton received for John Stones, would be a huge outlay from Everton, and a clear sign that they have major ambitions for the future.

Tempting a key AC Milan player to Goodison Park would show just how ambitious Everton can be thanks to Farhad Moshiri’s investment, with Romagnoli fitting the bill as an up-and-coming centre back who can be built around at the back – even if he comes with a huge price tag.
