According to Il Mattino (print version via Area Napoli), Everton could hire Fabio Cannavaro as the Toffees look to replace Rafa Benitez.

What’s the story?

Well, just months after Carlo Ancelotti left Goodison Park, it’s back to the drawing board for Farhad Moshiri after Benitez failed on Merseyside.

Interestingly, Cannavaro – who is not often mentioned when there’s a Premier League vacancy – has seen his name crop up in the Italian media.

The 48-year-old is currently unemployed after leaving Guangzhou in 2021.

Cannavaro has also spent time with Al-Nassr and Tianjin Quanjian during his managerial career, where he has enjoyed some success.

The Italian – who remains the only defender to win the Ballon d’Or – has won 126 of his 216 games in management.

Cannavaro has also won two trophies, lifting the Chinese Super League title and also the Chinese Super Cup.

He averages 1.95 points per game as a manager, while his sides have scored 451 goals in those 216 games.

Everton shouldn’t hire Fabio Cannavaro

If this happens, Moshiri will face serious questioning from the Everton fans.

Cannavaro is yet to manage in one of Europe’s top five leagues, so it would be a huge risk to bring him to the Premier League.

The Napoli-born tactician would be walking into a toxic environment at Goodison Park, where supporters are running out of patience.

Moshiri simply has to get the next appointment right, and there are few signs to suggest that Cannavaro is the answer.

Of course, you should never write people off in football.

However, Everton are just six points above the relegation zone, so this is no time for a risky appointment.

If Cannavaro arrived, he would be entitled to time, something Everton can’t really afford to give – the Toffees need an instant impact.

If Moshiri messes up this next appointment, Everton could quite easily find themselves in the Championship next season.
