Everton fans are expecting their club to spend heavily this summer.

The Daily Express claim that Everton are keen on signing Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij in the summer, as Ronald Koeman looks to inject some quality and youth into his defensive ranks.

The 25-year-old Dutchman is one of the continent’s most highly sought-after defenders after a fine campaign for Lazio, where he has made 21 Serie A starts.

And the Daily Express claim that Koeman is desperate to add the centre-back to his squad during the transfer window, and is preparing a £30 million offer to tempt the Italian giants into selling.

The Toffees boss has worked with De Vrij before, during their time together in the Eredivisie with Feyenoord, so he is obviously a keen admirer of the defender’s qualities.

The Merseyside outfit may not have things all their own way, however, with the Daily Star claiming that Chelsea are leading the race to sign the Holland international.

With the likes of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams approaching the twilight of their careers, the addition of a young centre-back will surely be Koeman’s priority this summer, and if they manage to sign De Vrij, they will surely be considered as genuine contenders for the top four next season.
