Everton are the ‘clear favourites’ to sign James Rodriguez from Real Madrid on a permanent transfer this summer, according to the Telegraph.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is said to be desperate for the transfer to go through, with the playmaker keen to work with the Italian boss again.

Ancelotti is a massive fan of Rodriguez, after managing him at Madrid and Bayern Munich, and it is thought that the Everton boss is the driving force behind the transfer.

Surprisingly, it is suggested by the Telegraph that Everton could even land Rodriguez for free.

Madrid are eager to get him off their books, and with just a year left on his contract, they know that they are not in a position to ask for a sizeable fee.

Rodriguez’s wages would still likely be expensive for Everton, but if they could take him without a fee, then he would be a stunning addition.

Rodriguez would immediately become Everton’s most talented player in possession upon his arrival, and he may just encourage more high profile players to join Goodison Park.

The 29-year-old signing would really highlight Everton’s ambition ahead of the new campaign.

Rodriguez, who has been described as ‘world class’ by former Madrid manager Jorge Valdano on Sky Sports, remains one of the finest playmakers in world football – and he could help take Everton to new heights next season.
