Report: Everton asked about late deal for new Tottenham signing Fernando Llorente

Everton reportedly wanted to sign Tottenham’s Fernando Llorente before his move to North London.

According to the Daily Mail (Press Reader, September 1st 2017), Everton asked about signing Fernando Llorente from Swansea City, before he decided to sign for Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day.

The Toffees enjoyed a productive summer in the transfer window, as Ronald Koeman was backed with the additions of Jordan Pickford, Cuco Martina, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Nikola Vlasic, Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney.

Koeman was though hoping to bring in a new centre forward, having seen top goalscorer and star hitman Romelu Lukaku sign for Manchester United in a big-money deal this summer.

Koeman had to make do without that forward though, as Everton failed to bring in a new centre forward – and the Daily Mail (Press Reader, September 1st 2017) report that the Toffees did in fact ask about a deal for Fernando Llorente.

The Spanish forward, who hit 15 goals in 33 games for Swansea City last season, completed a surprise deadline day move to Tottenham Hotspur, where he will now offer cover and competition for Harry Kane.

Whilst it seemed that Tottenham only had to fend off interest from rivals Chelsea, but it now appears that they also managed to beat Everton to his signature, if reports are to be believed.

Koeman appeared to be searching for a target man to lead the line for Everton, and Llorente – who possesses height, strength, dominant aerial ability and smart link-up play – could have fit the bill despite being 32, and he could have been similar to Koeman’s former Southampton striker Graziano Pelle.

Add in that Everton already signed Sigurdsson earlier this summer, and he could have rekindled his impressive link-up with Llorente having combined for goals last season, but Spurs won the race, and Everton ended the transfer window without a new centre forward, meaning they may well be looking on at how Llorente fares in North London.
