Report: Everton and Newcastle eyeing Schalke forward Donis Avdijaj

Newcastle United and Everton are amongst the Premier League sides reportedly keen on signing Donis Avdijaj this summer.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle and Everton both find themselves amongst the queue of clubs interested in signing Donis Avdijaj this summer with Schalke ready to sell the young forward.

The Mail reports that the Bundesliga side had extremely high hopes for the 21-year-old when he was coming through the ranks, with Liverpool monitoring his progress at one stage. However, they are now ready to let him leave.

The Mail adds that with just one year left on his contract, Schalke are willing to sell him for £2.5 million and the likes of the Toffees and Newcastle are considering making a bid.

Though Avdijaj has not exactly made the grade with his current club, he has enjoyed a productive loan spell in The Netherlands with Roda. He has scored three goals and provided two assists in 11 appearances in the Eredivisie. Nevertheless, it would be little surprise if Everton and Newcastle fans were not exactly doing cartwheels at the reports linking them with the youngster.

It would appear to be something of a gamble to target Avdijaj. Schalke appear to have lost a lot of faith in the likelihood that he will realise his potential – that is surely apparent given that they are only looking for the low seven-figure fee before they sell.

But that previous potential and low asking price is perhaps why Newcastle and Everton are making smart moves looking to try and sign the Kosovo international during this window.

It is a low-risk signing and he would arrive at St James’ Park or Goodison Park with next to no pressure on his shoulders. And given that he has shown some decent form out on loan, perhaps there is the potential for a summer transfer to prove inspired.
