Everton and Liverpool are ‘locked in a transfer battle’ to sign Corinthians striker Caio Emerson, according to the Sunday People (page 51).

Emerson, who was the Brazilian side’s top scorer en route to winning the under-17 national cup, was thought to have agreed to join Barcelona at the end of this season, but the deal has seemingly broken down.

Chelsea and Manchester City have been credited with interest in the past, but reportedly believed they would lose out to the Catalan giants.

Following the alleged breakdown, Everton and Liverpool are now said to be keen on the 17-year-old, who the report claims is regarded as one of Brazil’s most exciting young talents since Neymar.

Emerson has allegedly informed Corinthians he does not wish to sign a contract upon turning 18, leaving him free to sign a pre-contract with another club from January.

Liverpool have previously taken Lucas Leiva and Allan Rodrigues de Souza from the South American nation as youngsters, although it would be relatively new territory for Everton, who hired Steve Walsh to lead their recruitment in July.
