According to The Times, Everton interviewed Rui Faria before appointing Sean Dyche as their new manager.
Faria is best known as the long-time assistant manager of Jose Mourinho and has only ever had one senior job as the head coach of Qatari club Al-Duhail.
Faria has worked alongside Mourinho at various clubs, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
He was Mourinho’s right-hand man and played an instrumental role in the Portuguese manager’s success over the years.
Although Faria has limited experience as a manager, he is highly regarded in coaching circles and has a reputation for being an innovative and skilled coach – hence why Mourinho kept him close for such a long time.
Mourinho doesn’t spend so much time with you if you don’t have something to offer the game of football.
Everton’s interest in Faria seemed to suggest that they were looking to do things a little bit differently this time around, but, ultimately, they ended up appointing Sean Dyche, who, with all due respect, doesn’t bring about as much excitement as someone like Faria.
With his wealth of experience working with Mourinho, Faria could have been be the ideal candidate to come in at Goodison Park, but, it would have been a gamble.
Everton ultimately decided to go for the more experienced option in Sean Dyche, who has a proven track record in the Premier League.
Dyche is known for his no-nonsense approach and his ability to get the best out of his players, and he’s already started to implement his approach winning against Arsenal last weekend and re-invigorating this team.
Overall, while Faria was not ultimately appointed as Everton’s new manager, the fact he was interviewed is an interesting insight into how the Toffees boardroom thinks.
Whether or not Dyche is the right man for the job remains to be seen, but he’s seemingly a safer bet than someone like Faria right now.
