Swiss newspaper Blick claim that second-placed FC Basel want to sign Celtic and Rangers attackers Albian Ajeti and Cedric Itten. However, a return for Ajeti is much more likely – with Itten having already played for two clubs.
Itten, 25, has returned to Rangers this month after being recalled from German Bundesliga side Greuther Furth. Of course, he has since played for Rangers and a player cannot play for three sides in the same season.
It means that any interest in Furth can only be acted upon in the summer – though that could be a possibility given Itten is Swiss, and his form in the Swiss league with St. Gallen. Right now, Ajeti looks much more likely.
Basel have numerous names on their radar but they know 24-year-old Ajeti well. He scored 43 goals in 96 games for Basel, and is struggling for game time – playing just 48 times in 18 months since his £4.5million (BBC) move.
Basel eye Rangers and Celtic stars: Itten should stay, Ajeti should go
If Basel do come knocking in the summer for Itten, surely the Swiss ace has got to stay at Rangers and fight it out for his future. The striker has been unlucky to find Alfredo Morelos in superb form at times.
But right now, in his absence, he is showing Rangers fans what he is capable of and if he gets a run of games, there is no reason why he cannot still be a success at Ibrox. At Celtic, Ajeti is already earmarked as a flop.
Celtic have Giorgos Giakoumakis, Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi as options up front and there is no chance he gets into the side at the moment. Ajeti needs to go, but Itten has got to stay.
