According to the Shields Gazette, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are interested in signing Newcastle United’s Joelinton on loan this summer.
The Brazilian had a tough debut season in the Premier League. The Magpies paid a club-record £40 million (BBC) to sign him last summer but a return of only four goals has forced them to bring in another striker.
Newcastle signed Callum Wilson from Bournemouth earlier this week for a fee in the region of £20 million (Sky Sports). The Englishman was even handed Joelinton’s number nine shirt, which will have been a real kick in the teeth for the club’s record signing.
Wilson is likely to be Newcastle’s first-choice striker going into the new season this weekend. Joelinton will have to work hard to get back into the starting line-up or he may feel he wants to leave the club this summer.
The report claims Fenerbahce have put the Newcastle man on their wish list. The Turkish club’s boss, Erol Bulut, is said to be a big fan of Joelinton and is exploring the option of signing him on loan in the coming weeks.
Newcastle should keep Joelinton
It will be interesting to see how Steve Bruce deals with the situation. Joelinton, despite his struggles last season, is a popular figure at Newcastle. Jonjo Shelvey urged the fans to be more patient with the striker he described as a “man mountain” (Beautiful Game Podcast).
Joelinton is the type of player who needs a striker alongside him to be at his best. The Brazilian was out on his own in Bruce’s system last season but that could change if he decides to stay.
Wilson and Joelinton could form a great partnership up front for the Magpies. The Brazilian’s strength to hold up the ball combined with the former Bournemouth man’s movement could form a deadly front two for Newcastle next season.
