Report: Euro giants desperate to sell Wolves-linked star due to £105k-a-week wages

Juventus are desperate to get Wolverhampton Wanderers-linked winger Douglas Costa off their wage bill, viewing his £105,000-a-week pay packet as too much for a player stuck on the bench, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Life at the top level doesn’t end just because there are 30 candles on your birthday cake – as Cristiano Ronaldo, Giorgino Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci have proved time and time again in those iconic black-and-white stripes.

However, considering the injuries have started to rack up for a player whose main asset remains his explosive pace, you have to wonder how many years Costa has left as one of football’s bonafide A-listers.

Juventus, it seems, believe the Brazilian is the wrong side of the hill.

Costa started just six Serie A games during Maurizio Sarri’s reign and, after playing eight minutes of their season’s opener against Sampdoria on Sunday, the situation remains the same under new coach Andrea Pirlo.

Juventus are looking to break up one dynasty and build another. With Gonzalo Higuain, Sami Khedira and Blaise Matuidi already on their way out, the Scudetto winners now hope to find a buyer for Costa.

The £37 million forward is earning £105,000 a week, which seems too much for a club that no longer regards Costa as a guaranteed starter, particularly when you consider how hard Juventus have been hit by the financial fallout.

Finding a buyer has proved more difficult than expected, however.

Tuttosport claims Jorge Mendes hopes to take Costa to Wolves, although a player used to competing at the top level isn’t exactly enamoured with joining a club that won’t play European football this season.
