The Mail claim Erik Ten Hag is considering a surprise move to raid Tottenham and lure Steven Bergwijn to Manchester United this summer. Ten Hag is expected to become United boss, with verbals already agreed.
The current Ajax manager, 52, has been trying to sign Bergwijn from Tottenham for the last couple of windows. While Tottenham were open to the Netherlands international’s exit, his wages were an issue for Ajax.
Indeed, earning £100,000 a week at Tottenham – as per the Mail – such an issue would not be of concern at Old Trafford. It is believed that Manchester United would have to pay in the region of £20million to sign Bergwijn.
Whether Tottenham would sell to a direct rival remains to be seen. But what is clear, is that Ten Hag is a long-term admirer and was even in the stands to watch Bergwijn score a brace for his country against Denmark.
Manchester United eye Bergwijn: Should Tottenham sell to Ten Hag?
The issue is that Manchester United are not only another Premier League side, but they are a club competing at the same level as Spurs. Challenging for the top four, and hoping to be a title challenger the following season.
However, Bergwijn has fallen even further down the pecking order since the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski. If Spurs get an offer for Bergwijn, in the price range that they feel is right, then he should go.
