Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag rates Scott McTominay highly, amid speculation that Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United want to sign the midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Football Transfers have reported that Newcastle United are interested in signing Scott McTominay from Premier League rivals Manchester United.

The report has claimed that Newcastle want to secure the services of the Scotland international midfielder in the January transfer window and remain keen on the 26-year-old.

However, Ten Hag rates the midfielder highly.

According to the report, the Manchester United boss sees McTominay “as a big part of his plans for next season” and “an important part” of his squad “going forward into their Champions League campaign”.

What should Scott McTominay do about Manchester United and Newcastle United?

In our view, if Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag wants to keep Scott McTominay, then the midfielder should not push for a move to Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old – who is “underrated and undervalued”, according to former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood on talkSPORT in March 2023 – may not be a particularly ‘great’ player, but the midfielder has done well over the years for the Red Devils.

If Ten Hag thinks that McTominay would be a good player in his squad for next season, then the midfielder should stay.

Now, of course, it is clear that the midfielder will have to work hard to play week in and week out for the Red Devils, but he should have confidence in himself.
