According to The Sun, Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Mason Mount, with Newcastle also interested in signing the Chelsea man.

What’s the story?

Well, this would be quite the move for Erik ten Hag, in his first transfer window at Old Trafford.

The Sun believe Manchester United are monitoring Mount’s contract situation at Stamford Bridge, after talks over a fresh deal stalled following the UK Government’s decision to sanction Roman Abramovich.

It is said that Ten Hag first noticed the £88,000-a-week Chelsea man when he was on loan in the Netherlands with Vitesse Arnhem, and has tracked him ever since.

Given the chance, the report adds that the 52-year-old would jump at the chance to sign Mount, if he does become available.

Elsewhere, it was a separate report from The Sun which claimed that Eddie Howe wants to bring the England international to Newcastle this summer.

Pep Guardiola is also said to be a fan of the 23-year-old.

Mount was named Player of the Season at Chelsea after a stunning season for the Blues, in which he scored 13 goals, while also providing 16 assists, in 53 appearances.

Manchester United & Newcastle would surely have to break the bank

In our view, the Red Devils and the Magpies would have to offer a huge sum if they want to lure Mount away from west London.

The Portsmouth-born midfielder is arguably the poster boy of Chelsea right now, and as seen in his Player of the Season award, he is a vital to Thomas Tuchel.

Therefore, with his current contract running until June 2024, we can’t see a way in which Ten Hag or Howe can pull this deal off without breaking the bank.

It would surely require Mount to agitate for an exit as well, something he seems unlikely to do given the fact he supports Chelsea.

Nevertheless, keep an eye on the situation, as the arrival of Todd Boehly could cause some changes at Stamford Bridge.
