Tottenham Hotspur are due to take on Colchester United, and Mauricio Pochettino is expected to make wholesale changes.

According to the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are set to give Eric Dier his first appearance of the season against Colchester United this evening.

Dier has had a hugely testing 2019 so far, with the England international sinking down the pecking order at Spurs.

Injury and illness has affected Dier badly, and he has not been given a look in at all this season so far by Pochettino.

The Argentine boss now admits it has been very difficult for Dier, but he is reportedly set to be picked this evening.

“It has been difficult [for Dier]. Of course it is tough for him,” Pochettino said.

“He has to wait through training and then of course he has the opportunity. He has to try to fight for his place.

“We have a big squad, I need to take the decision performance by performance. The plan is the plan. We are going to assess the player and then make the decision.”

Dier’s return to Tottenham’s team could come at an excellent time, as Pochettino’s men badly need a boost.

Dier surely has a chance to break back into Tottenham’s side in defensive midfield, with their defence seemingly needing more protection.

Spurs have thrown away three leads already this season, and were beaten by Leicester City at the weekend, despite being 1-0 up.

Victor Wanyama came off the bench for Tottenham at the King Power Stadium, but the defensive midfielder failed to shield his back four well enough, and Leicester capitalised.

There now really seems to be an opening for Dier again, and if he does perform well this evening then Pochettino may be very tempted to use him more often.
