Report: Eoghan Stokes set for Shamrock Rovers after Leeds United exit

Leeds United released Eoghan Stokes earlier this month.

According to The Irish Mirror, Eoghan Stokes is set for a swift return to football following his release from Leeds United, with a move to Shamrock Rovers understood to be close.

Stokes, 21, joined Leeds from St. Kevin’s Boys in Ireland back in 2012, having already featured for the Republic of Ireland at youth level, and he was tipped for a bright future at Elland Road.

However, earlier this month, Stokes was released from his contract at Elland Road, and he looks set for a swift move back to his native Ireland with Shamrock Rovers.

It’s claimed that Shamrock now hope to win the race for Stokes, and he even turned out for the club in a pre-season friendly against Brentford B on Saturday, giving him a chance to win a deal.

Christiansen’s prediction not quite right

After Stokes’ contract came to an end this month, then-Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen – who has since been sacked – suggested to the club’s official website that Stokes should be heading to a League One team in England.

Instead, Stokes is heading back to Ireland, and will be hoping to finally settle down and play some football having only ever made one first-team appearance during his time with Leeds.

Now 21, Stokes needs to be given opportunities to play, and after prior links to Cork City and Dundalk, the forward – who can play in attacking midfield or up front – will be looking to land opportunities at Shamrock Rovers.

With four goals in nine caps for Ireland at Under-19 level, Stokes has talent, and he will now be looking to prove Leeds wrong by becoming a star in Ireland.
