Glasgow Rangers may have to see off some competition if they hope to bring Russell Martin to Ibrox on a permanent basis.

Martin joined the Gers on loan from Norwich City during the January transfer window and has featured regularly since joining Graeme Murty’s side, forming a very good partnership alongside David Bates during the first few weeks of his spell at Ibrox.

It is not clear whether Rangers will want to pursue a long-term deal for the 32-year-old, but he told the Daily Record back in January that he would be keen to stay on a permanent basis having played a peripheral role for the Canaries this term.

While it remains to be seen what the Gers’ plans are regarding Martin’s future, the Record’s suggestion that Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves may potentially have question marks hanging over their futures in the summer hints that if the Portuguese pair leave, keeping Martin may become more important.
Should Rangers pursue permanent Martin deal?
More questions have been asked about Martin’s quality in the weeks leading up to the international break, but he has definitely made a decent start to his Ibrox career and his experience could prove beneficial if the likes of Alves and Cardoso do decide to seek a fresh challenge this summer.
His recent dip in form should send a warning to Rangers that they should not break the bank to get him back next season, but perhaps they should be open to the idea of keeping him as he may be a decent option to have next season.
