Report: English club hopeful they can keep £15m Everton & Leeds target

Blackburn Rovers are now reportedly hopeful that star attacker Ben Brereton Diaz could stay with the club amid contract talks with the forward, with Everton and Leeds looking to sign the 23-year-old in the summer.

According to Lancashire Live, discussions are ongoing between Brereton Diaz and Blackburn over the former Nottingham Forest star potentially staying at Ewood Park, with the winger currently one of the most in-demand Championship players on the market.

Brereton Diaz has continued his incredible form from last season into the new campaign as the Chilean international currently sits on five goals in all competitions. Yet to many, it’s still quite a surprise that the Stoke-born winger is still at Blackburn following the summer transfer window.

As reported by the Daily Mail, many clubs were interested in signing Brereton Diaz, including the likes of Everton and Leeds. However, no side was willing to match Blackburn’s £15m asking price for the star attacker given that his current contract is due to expire next summer.

With Brereton Diaz in good form yet again, Rovers’ best chance of keeping their best attacker seems to be if they win promotion back to the Premier League this season, with Blackburn currently sat sixth in the Championships standings after 11 games.

Indeed, whilst Blackburn might be a in strong league position come January, this alone might not be enough to convince Brereton Diaz to stay for the remainder of the season, especially if the likes of Everton and Leeds reignite their interest in the Chilean superstar.

Brereton Diaz not leaving in the summer after the year he had in the Championship was quite the surprise, to say the least, yet Blackburn are playing a very risky game if they’re still fighting that the forward could stay beyond his current deal, especially with Premier League interest still in the air.

Indeed, Brereton Diaz is looking more and more like a top-flight player. And with January just three months away, there’s a strong chance that the attacker will want a move to one of the big guns in the new year even with contract talks ongoing at Blackburn.
