Emre Can will stay at Liverpool beyond the summer transfer window if he is paid more than £200,000 per week, according to The Mirror.

Can has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2014 when he joined from Bayer Leverkusen for a transfer fee reported by The Independent to be worth £10 million and when Brendan Rodgers – now the manager of Celtic – was in charge of the Reds.

The 24-year-old, who can operate as a defender or as a midfielder, is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season.

According to The Mirror, the Germany international will stay at Anfield beyond the summer of 2018 if he is given more than £200,000 per week as wages and becomes the highest paid player at the club.

The report has also also claimed that Manchester City and Juventus are among the admirers of Can.

Not worth £200,000-a-week

Can is a very talented and promising footballer who can only improve in the coming years, but Liverpool should not pay him anywhere near the £200,000-a-week salary he reportedly wants.

The Reds can find better midfielders than Can in the summer transfer window for much less, and there are far better players in the current squad – such as Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk – for him to be the highest paid player at Anfield.
