The American is said to be the final cog in the transfer process ahead of the player’s switch to Bologna.
It is looking increasingly likely that Emanuele Giaccherini will be leaving Sunderland today, with Bologna believed to be on the verge of tying down a loan deal for the player.
It is reported by Corriere dello Sport that Bologna and Sunderland have held two meetings about the player this week and that a deal is on the verge of completion.
The report claims the only thing currently blocking the move is the final approval of Sunderland owner and chairman Ellis Short. Once he rubberstamps the move, which is set to see Sunderland still pay a bulk of the Italian’s wages, he will be on his way to the recently promoted Serie A club.
The 30-year-old was a shock signing back in 2013. He arrived from Juventus for a fee reported by The Mirror to be in the £6.5 million region. He came as a regular in the Italian national team, but it has not been a great time on Wearside for the player.
The Italian, who has 21 caps for the Azzurri, played 32 times in his first season at the club, scoring five goals.
However 2014-15 was spent mainly on the physio table. He played just 11 games, and scored no goals, in a disappointing campaign.
