Derby County are reportedly closing in on Efe Ambrose.
According to the Daily Mail, Derby County are set to sign defender Efe Ambrose on a free transfer subject to a medical, with talks held on Wednesday.
The Rams have seen Fikayo Tomori show real quality alongside Richard Keogh, but Frank Lampard wants some added cover after loaning Alex Pearce to Millwall last month.
No centre back came in before the January transfer deadline, but Lampard may yet have a deal up his sleeve outside of the transfer window.
The Daily Mail now report that Derby are poised to sign free agent Ambrose, with the defender expected to sign in the coming days after holding talks on Wednesday.
Ambrose, 30, left Scottish side Hibernian last month, exercising a clause in his contract to leave Easter Road and become a free agent.
January came and went without any takers for the former Celtic man, but Derby are now set to sign him ahead of Bolton and even bitter rivals Nottingham Forest, who have allegedly been in contact with Ambrose of late.
A Nigerian international with more than 50 caps to his name, Ambrose starred with Hibs, rebuilding his career under Neil Lennon having left Celtic in 2017.
Ambrose could be a smart addition to Lampard’s squad on a free transfer, potentially offering more defensive depth as the Rams chase a play-off place this season.
