The Express claim that Burnley have tabled a £10million bid to sign Zenit St. Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun before the end of the January window. It comes after both Newcastle and Everton were linked with the Iranian star.

Joining Zenit two years ago in January 2019, 27-year-old Azmoun has been in sensational form for the Russian champions. In his 104 games in all competitions, Azmoun has netted a huge 62 goals – and laid on 23 assists.

Azmoun, who also has 39 international goals in 60 caps, is out of contract at Zenit at the end of the season and a move to a bigger European league is being touted. Lyon have been strongly linked with taking him to France.

The Mail report that Newcastle have made an enquiry, while 90Min have also suggested this month that Everton have opened talks. But the Express claim that Sean Dyche is about to overtake both – to replace Chris Wood.

The Express report on Thursday that Burnley have made an offer of £10million to sign Azmoun – far more than what was previously touted. Juventus are also keen, but Zenit want a replacement first.

Newcastle and Everton blow: Azmoun the perfect plan-B striker

Newcastle and Everton both have first-choice strikers – in Callum Wilson and Dom Calvert-Lewin. But both have been injured of late, and both have had to rely on replacements – in Everton’s case, Salomon Rondon.

The ex-Newcastle man has struggled at Everton, while Newcastle have spent £25million to sign Chris Wood. So, the question is, do either need a new striker? Or, is it simply that Azmoun is a bargain at £10million.

The latter is certainly true. The fact Burnley want him to replace Wood is largely down to his plan-B type of style, a target man who is supreme in the air. Everton and Newcastle have got to move quickly, if they want him.
