Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle would rather stay at St James’s Park than return to West Bromwich Albion, says a report.

Dwight Gayle isn’t giving up on a Newcastle United career, according to The Birmingham Mail.

Gayle left Newcastle to join West Bromwich Albion on a season-long loan last summer, and wound up being a revelation for the Championship side.

The 29-year-old, who managed 24 goals in 34 league starts for the Baggies, has been heavily linked with a permanent move to the Hawthorns this summer.

He wasn’t a success with the Magpies on their return to the Premier League during the 2017-18 campaign, netting only six times in 35 top-flight outings.

But according to The Birmingham Mail, Gayle, valued at £20 million by Newcastle, would like the chance to reignite his career at St James’s Park.

Could he?

In a word, no.

Gayle is a good goalscorer, but only in the Championship. With 21 goals in 99 Premier League appearances, the former Crystal Palace star has never been prolific in the top tier and, with the striker turning 30 this year, that’s not likely to change now, is it?

If the North-East side receive a bid anywhere close to £20 million, selling is an absolute no-brainer.
