Newcastle United have reportedly told Stoke City that Dwight Gayle is not for sale, and the striker is not interested in leaving either.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Newcastle have informed Stoke that they have no intention of selling Dwight Gayle right now, while the striker himself has little desire to leave St James’ Park this summer.

After a stunning season in the Championship, Gayle struggled to replicate that form in the Premier League as he scored six goals in 35 appearances. And the Potters may have perhaps been hoping that that return would tempt the Magpies into considering a sale this summer.

The Chronicle reports that Gary Rowett’s men made a £10 million bid for the 27-year-old, but Newcastle have informed Stoke that they do not plan to consider selling the striker unless they land a marquee goalscorer of their own.

And to make Stoke’s task even more difficult, the report suggests that Gayle is settled on Tyneside and is not keen to consider leaving Newcastle this summer either.

Rafael Benitez Manager

While Gayle was not prolific this past season, it seems to be a smart move to keep him around for next season. In certain games, Gayle seemed to ask the perfect questions of the opposition defenders. The fact that he was particularly impressive in the games against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United should perhaps tell its own story.

At Premier League level, Gayle may never be the undisputed first choice at St James’ Park, but he arguably has a role to play and letting him leave would have perhaps been a mistake. Luckily for Newcastle however, it seems that Benitez has no plans to make that mistake.
