Rangers‘ pursuit of Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman appears to have hit another hurdle after it was reported in his homeland that Rotterdam giants Feyenoord have “expressed an interest” in the Heerenveen star.

Dutch outlet VI claim that Feyenoord coach Arne Slot is “very fond” of Veerman and wants to add him to his squad – but could struggle to meet Herenveen’s asking price for the midfielder.

Veerman is under contract until the summer but has made it clear he wants to move this summer, with Rangers and Hellas Verona also keen to land his signature.

The report also claims that Heerenveen have turned down €5million from Verona for Veerman.

Heerenveen reportedly want as much as £8.5million for the 22-year-old this summer and it seems unlikely anyone is going to meet their asking price.

With the 22-year-old keen to move on, the likes of Rangers may stand to benefit from a reduced fee – although competition from Feyenoord would undoubtedly make it harder.

A move to Rangers would pose its own problems for the Light Blues with Gerrard already facing a real balancing act when it comes to naming his Champions League squad, with a few of his senior stars likely to have to miss out to comply with the squad rules.

The fee Heerenveen want would make Veerman Rangers’ second-most expensive player ever and it is hard to see the Gers splash that sort of cash this summer given everything going on off-the-pitch.

Veerman might well end up at Ibrox though this summer – but the chances are it won’t be until much nearer the transfer deadline at the end of next month.
