Barry Ferguson was instantly linked with a return to Glasgow Rangers after he left his job at Clyde last week.

A report in the Herald Scotland has suggested that Rangers will not be turning to Barry Ferguson as they search to find Mark Warburton’s successor, despite circumstances hinting that an Ibrox return could have been on the cards.
The Gers are still looking for their next manager following Warburton’s departure earlier this month. And while several names have been linked with the post, there appears to have been little movement regarding an appointment with the Herald Scotland suggesting that filling the director of football role is the Scottish Premiership side’s first priority.
That lack of activity meant that when Ferguson departed from Clyde last week, Rangers fans began to wonder if their former captain was on the verge of being given the role.
One of the criticisms levelled at Warburton during his time in charge was that he perhaps did not understand enough about the club’s stature to respect the expectations at Ibrox.

Therefore, it was not difficult to see why the change in Ferguson’s employment status led to some supporters believing that a return to the club where he won five league titles, five Scottish Cups and five League Cups was possibly on the cards.
However, Herald Scotland have suggested that the timing of his departure from the League Two side was purely coincidental and down to a run of poor results, and that he is not on the Gers’ radar.

The news is likely to receive a mixed response given the reaction when the 39-year-old resigned. While there is no question that he will know what the players have to achieve to hit the club’s expectations, his managerial record is uninspiring currently, so it may be too early in his career in the dugout to be given such a role.
Of course, this news may also frustrate fans because it appeared, due to the speculation, that the wait for their next manager may be coming to an end. However, with Herald Scotland suggesting that he is not in the running, the search seemingly has a while to go yet.
