Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld is reportedly in line for a new deal worth £70,000-a-week.

According to the Daily Mail, Toby Alderweireld is expected to earn around £70,000-a-week when he signs a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham are in Champions League action this evening as they take on CSKA Moscow at Wembley Stadium, but all the talk in the build-up to the game has surrounded defender Alderweireld.

Firstly, the good news; Alderweireld is back from a knee injury which has kept him out of action since the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on October 15th, and he could be named on the bench this evening.

The not so good news revolved around his future. Belgian newspaper Le Soir reported that Alderweireld has a €30m (£25m) release clause in his contract at White Hart Lane, sparking concern from Spurs fans.

Le Soir have since followed up with another report, claiming that the release clause only comes into effect in 2019, in a piece of genius from chairman Daniel Levy. The clause will only be active for 14 days before the end of Alderweireld’s current deal, and would simply protect Spurs from losing the Belgian international defender for nothing when he’s 30.

Now though, Spurs are pressing ahead with a new deal for Alderweireld, as they look to reward him for 18 months of superb performances, that have seen him become one of the Premier League’s top centre backs since signing from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015.

The Daily Mail claim that Alderweireld is expected to sign a new contract with Spurs, believed to be worth around £70,000-a-week, a boost from this current £50,000-a-week wage but still some way shy of Harry Kane’s new deal worth more than £100,000-a-week.

That would be the latest in a long line of contract boosts for Spurs after tying up deals for Kane, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Harry Winks this season – and another sign that Tottenham fans have nothing worry about regarding Alderweireld’s future and the alleged release clause.
