Leeds United’s final game of the Championship season was overshadowed by Charlie Taylor’s refusal to play.

A report in the Daily Mail has suggested that Leeds plan to fine Charlie Taylor following his incredible refusal to play in the Whites’ clash with Wigan on the final day of the Championship season, and has disclosed how Garry Monk responded when told about the left-back’s decision.

Taylor overshadowed Leeds’ draw at the DW Stadium after it became known that he had refused to feature in the squad ahead of his contract at Elland Road expiring in the summer.

The Mail reports that the left-back informed Monk that his agent had instructed him to avoid travelling with the squad for the trip to Wigan.

Interestingly, Monk apparently did all he could to try and convince the academy graduate to change his mind and take a place in the team, but obviously, failed to persuade the 23-year-old to travel.

The Mail adds that Leeds plan to reprimand Taylor ahead of his inevitable exit in the coming months, by handing him a fine.

In some ways, it is perhaps surprising that Monk tried to change Taylor’s mind. He would have undoubtedly been angered by the defender’s decision, and he would have been forgiven for simply letting him face the backlash from the fans especially as the result was not particularly important to either clubs’ season.

However, Monk seems to have realised that not only would the incident steal some of the headlines away from what has been an encouraging season for the Whites, but it would also see Taylor’s incredibly promising spell with Leeds end on the kind of extremely sour note that was simply unnecessary.
