According to The Mirror, Atletico Madrid are leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks, ahead of Everton.

It’s claimed that Spurs have decided that Winks can leave the club this summer given that Oliver Skipp will be coming back to the club at the end of the season having been out on loan at Norwich City this term.

Winks wasn’t even in the squad to face Aston Villa in Tottenham’s last Premier League game, and it looks like his time with the club is coming to an end having failed to convince Jose Mourinho.

Everton are keen on Winks having looked into a deal in 2020, but it’s now thought that Atletico are leading the race with Diego Simeone – a manager linked to Spurs by 90Min recently – interested in a deal.

Atletico won’t be signing Arsenal loanee Lucas Torreira permanently this summer, so Winks could make the move from North London to replace him.

Winks, 25, has come up through the Tottenham, and has spent almost 20 years with the club having been signed at the age of just six.

His playing time has dipped since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was signed from Southampton over the summer, and with a spot in the England squad this summer now surely beyond him, Winks needs to play.

Winks has ties to Spain; his maternal grandparents were Spanish, and the chance to play in La Liga for a title challenger may be too good to pass up.
